Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack/Backend Technologies

Turnitin is seeking a Senior Fullstack/Backend Engineer with strong focus on backend development in Java and serverless architectures, combined with solid frontend experience. This role is ideal for engineers passionate about building scalable distributed systems, data modeling, and delivering high-performing, reliable software solutions for the award-winning educational platform. Responsibilities: Design, develop, and optimize scalable shared backend services using Java and serverless technologies (AWS Lambda); Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems; Contribute to frontend component development as needed; Optimize existing services for improved performance and cost-efficiency; Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Architects, Product Managers, and engineering leads; Provide mentorship to junior developers; Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines; Ensure high-quality code through peer reviews and automated testing; Create comprehensive documentation for shared components. Essential Qualifications: 8+ years backend development expertise with Java proficiency; Experience with serverless frameworks (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions); Hands-on frontend experience (React, Web Components); Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling; Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams and distributed teams across Europe and USA; Practical cloud experience with AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge); Extensive software development best practices knowledge; CI/CD tools experience; Effective communication skills in agile environments; Passion for mentoring junior engineers.
