Position Description

As part of the GE Vernova Rotating Machines Product Engineering team, you will play a significant role in helping serve our customers by providing technical solutions to support the design and manufacturing of large industrial synchronous and induction motors. GE has been producing large rotating electrical equipment for more than 130 years, producing motors up to 100,000hp. Our machines are found in a variety of critical applications, including marine, industrial and power generation.

Based in the Peterborough office, you will work with the design team to support the development of technical solutions and designs for new rotating electrical equipment, retrofits, upgrades, and spares.

The successful candidate will report to the Rotating Machines Peterborough Product Engineering Leader.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As a Mechanical Engineering intern you will:

  • Learn about the design and construction of large rotating electrical machines (motors/generators) as well as their application and operation in the field.
  • Learn how to apply engineering principles and analysis methods to the design of large rotating electrical machines (motors/generators) including static structural, dynamic, torsional and thermal performance.
  • Help develop and validate analysis tools used to by the engineering & design teams.
  • Support the development of parametric CAD automation systems used for the rapid creation of models, production drawings and Bills of Material.
  • Participate in the review of supplier documentation and inspection records to validate conformance of custom components to the engineering & design requirements.

Required Characteristics:

  • A solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles and the ability to apply these to solve static & dynamic structural and thermal system problems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A collaborative attitude and ability to work in a cross functional and diverse team.
  • An abundance of curiosity and a desire and willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with basic 2D & 3D CAD & finite element analysis software.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and application of electric motors and generators.
  • Experience working in a custom engineering environment.
  • Experience with programming and small-scale software development.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes related to rotating equipment manufacture (welding, fabricating, machining).

For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $24-28/hr. CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set.
