An opportunity for an experienced SCRAP PURCHASER is required for permanent employment based in Cape Town.
- Our client is expanding its raw materials procurement division and requires an experienced Scrap Purchaser, preferably someone recognised in the industry as a “superstar scrap buyer” with strong supplier relationships and deep knowledge of scrap metal markets.
- The successful candidate must have minimum 5 years' exp in the steel industry, specifically in scrap procurement, scrap yard operations, metallurgy, or materials sourcing. Exposure to large steelmaking operations such as ArcelorMittal, Scaw Metals, Cape Gate, Highveld Steel, or established scrap suppliers is highly advantageous.
- This role is critical in ensuring that consistent, high-quality, correctly graded ferrous and non-ferrous scrap is sourced at competitive pricing to meet production requirements.
1. Scrap Sourcing & Supply Management
- Identify, source, and purchase scrap metal in line with daily, weekly, and monthly production requirements.
- Maintain consistent supply of high-quality, correctly graded scrap to support steelmaking operations.
- Evaluate scrap offers and assess suitability based on melt shop requirements.
2. Vendor Management & Networking
- Build and maintain strong relationships with scrap suppliers, recyclers, dealers, and transporters.
- Expand the supplier network by onboarding new vendors.
- Negotiate competitive pricing, payment terms and supply agreements.
- Conduct supplier visits, scrap yard inspections and quality verification checks.
3. Quality Control & Scrap Evaluation
- Inspect scrap loads for contamination, density and grade accuracy.
- Assess the weight of scrap trucks and validate quantities delivered.
- Reject or negotiate price reductions for loads that do not meet specified quality standards.
- Work closely with production teams to ensure scrap meets metallurgical and melting requirements.
4. Costing, Pricing & Market Intelligence
- Track scrap market trends, pricing movements, and regional supply dynamics.
- Monitor factors affecting scrap cost structures (fuel, logistics, export demand, supply cycles).
- Maintain a cost database and provide weekly reports on pricing and supplier performance.
- Ensure scrap is purchased at optimal, competitive market prices.
5. Logistics Coordination
- Coordinate deliveries with transporters ensuring timely and efficient offloading at the plant.
- Monitor turnaround times, weighbridge readings and documentation.
- Resolve delivery disputes, shortages, or quality discrepancies.
6. Administration, Reporting & Compliance
- Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, supplier agreements, and delivery performance.
- Process purchase orders, delivery notes and weighbridge slips.
- Ensure procurement aligns with company compliance, governance and ethical sourcing standards.
7. Continuous Improvement
- Recommend improvements to scrap procurement strategy.
- Introduce new suppliers to improve quality and reduce cost.
- Reduce contamination levels and enhance consistency of scrap used in production.

- Understanding of ferrous vs non-ferrous scrap, contamination issues, melting suitability and production-grade requirements.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of scrap metal grading, classification and specifications.
- Ability to identify scrap quality by inspection.
- Knowledge of scrap truck load weights, moisture content, contamination rate estimation, and pricing impacts.
- Understanding of logistics, transport costs, and turnaround times for bulk scrap deliveries.
- Matric (essential)
- Training in procurement, metallurgy, or scrap grading (adv)
- Valid driver's license
- Willingness and readiness to relocate to Cape Town (client provides support) Temporary Accommodation, Medical Aid, Provident Fund
- Strong negotiation skills and ability to influence suppliers.
- Excellent communication, costing and record-keeping skills.
