An opportunity for an experienced MECHANICAL SUPERVISOR is required for permanent employment based in Cape Town to manage and lead mechanical maintenance activities on shift.
- This role is aimed at candidates coming from heavy industrial, steelmaking or similar environments such as ArcelorMittal, Scaw Metals, Cape Gate, Highveld Steel, or large continuous-process plants where mechanical reliability and safety are critical.
- The Mechanical Supervisor will play a central role in ensuring plant availability through effective supervision of fitters, planned maintenance, safety compliance and equipment reliability.
1. Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, organise and control a team of shift fitters and mechanical artisans.
- Allocate daily tasks, monitor work quality and ensure the completion of repairs, installations and maintenance activities.
- Provide on-the-job technical guidance, coaching and hands-on assistance when required.
2. Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs
- Oversee mechanical maintenance of critical steel plant equipment, including:
• Cranes & hoisting equipment
• Rigging systems
• Furnaces & ladle equipment
• Conveyors
• Gearboxes, pumps & compressors
• Hydraulics & pneumatics - Ensure all breakdowns are attended to swiftly to minimise downtime.
- Conduct mechanical fault finding and ensure quality workmanship on repairs.
3. Planning & Scheduling
- Plan and prepare maintenance work for upcoming shifts.
- Ensure availability of tools, spares and materials before work begins.
- Coordinate planned shutdowns and maintenance intervals in line with production requirements.
- Prioritise tasks based on safety, urgency and production impact.
4. Equipment Condition Monitoring
- Maintain accurate records of equipment condition, repairs, inspections and service intervals.
- Monitor critical assets and identify potential failures early.
- Conduct inspections on cranes, rigging equipment and lifting machinery—reporting defects immediately.
5. Safety, Compliance & MEIBC Practices
- Enforce strict adherence to OHS Act, safe working procedures and plant safety rules.
- Ensure lock-out, permit-to-work and risk assessments are completed correctly.
- Promote a safety-driven culture among artisans.
- Ensure compliance with MEIBC Grade 5 standards, shift patterns, and labour guidelines.
6. Communication & Reporting
- Communicate repair progress, breakdown status and maintenance priorities to production and senior maintenance staff.
- Complete detailed shift reports and handovers.
- Participate in morning meetings, toolbox talks and safety briefings.

- Min 5 years' mechanical exp in the steel industry (melt shop, furnaces, rolling mills, heavy machinery, cranes, rigging equipment).
- Proven experience supervising artisans in a high-risk, high-temperature and continuous-production environment.
- Strong background in mechanical maintenance, breakdown response, fault-finding and heavy industrial equipment repairs.
- Trade Test: Fitter & Turner (essential)
- Exp. with crane and rigger-related mechanical maintenance (essential)
- N3 or higher in Mechanical Engineering (advantageous)
- Strong understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, gearboxes and heavy rotating equipment.
- Must be ready and willing to relocate to Cape Town.
- Valid driver's licence and clear references.
- Working knowledge of MEIBC Grade 5 requirements and labour relations (advantageous).
