An opportunity for an experienced SHREDDER OPERATOR is required for permanent employment based in Cape Town.
- We are searching for a Skilled Shredder Operator with proven experience in large-scale scrap processing environments — ideally from ArcelorMittal, Scaw Metals, SA Steel Mills, Columbus Stainless, or similar high-load steel production facilities.
- This role is integral to maintaining continuous material flow into the steelmaking process. The Shredder Operator will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and technically proficient operation of the shredder, contributing directly to plant productivity and minimal downtime.
Operational Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and control the Shredder Plant in accordance with production requirements and safety standards.
- Maintain consistent feed quality by ensuring correct loading, sorting, and preparation of material entering the shredder.
- Conduct pre-start inspections, safety checks, and monitor wear components.
- Follow operational SOPs, emergency procedures, and ensure zero deviations from safety protocols.
Technical & Mechanical Awareness
- Identify abnormal sounds, vibrations, throughput fluctuations, and other signs of potential mechanical or electrical issues.
- Provide accurate technical feedback to Engineering, Electrical, and Maintenance teams for quick fault diagnosis and minimal downtime.
- Assist during scheduled maintenance, shutdown activities, and general housekeeping of the shredder area.
Production Efficiency
- Maintain target throughput while minimizing contamination and ensuring consistent output quality.
- Ensure optimal use of machinery to prevent avoidable wear and breakdowns.
- Record operational data, log sheets, and downtime causes with accuracy.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce and adhere to OHSA, company safety standards, and PPE requirements at all times.
- Ensure safe handling of scrap, material movement, and equipment operation in a high-risk environment.
Technical Competencies
- Strong operational understanding of shredder plants and heavy scrap processing equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot minor operational issues.
- Hands-on understanding of ferr ferrous and non-ferrous materials (advantageous).
Behavioral Attributes
- High situational awareness in an industrial environment.
- Calm under pressure, able to make sound decisions during machine irregularities.
- Strong communication skills with production, engineering, safety, and supervisory teams.
- Reliable, disciplined, and safety-driven.
- Min 5 years' exp in the steel manufacturing, scrap processing, or ferrous metals environment.
- Prior experience operating heavy shredding machinery in a high-volume steelworks or scrapyard environment is essential.
- Grade 12 / Matric (compulsory).
- Mechanical or technical certifications will be advantageous (but not required).
- Willingness and readiness to relocate to Cape Town (client offers full relocation assistance and accommodation support).
