An opportunity exists for a highly experienced CIVIL ENGINEER for permanent employment within a large-scale steel and iron manufacturing operation based in the Cape Town Region.
- This role reports into Executive Management (Projects & Operations) and is responsible for all civil works across the plant, including strategic project execution, structural design oversight, site supervision, and capital infrastructure development — with immediate focus on a major oxygen plant project and ongoing heavy industrial upgrades.
- This is not a general commercial construction role. We are seeking a candidate with proven exposure to integrated or mini-mill steel environments and high-capacity industrial operations
- This role is ideally suited to candidates with significant exposure to integrated or mini-mill steel operations, including experience within large heavy-industry environments such as ArcelorMittal, Scaw Metals, Highveld Steel, or similar high-capacity steelmaking plants (adv).
Project Planning & Design
• Conduct site analysis and interpret survey data
• Develop project plans, structural designs, blueprints and technical specifications
• Ensure integration with mechanical, electrical and production requirements
Feasibility & Risk Assessment
• Evaluate technical and financial feasibility of civil works
• Assess environmental impacts and regulatory requirements
• Conduct structural and operational risk assessments
Project & Site Management
• Oversee site labour and contractor performance
• Manage materials logistics and civil project sequencing
• Monitor timelines, budgets and quality benchmarks
• Coordinate across operations, engineering and maintenance teams
Structural Engineering Oversight
• Design and verify structures to withstand static and dynamic loads
• Ensure durability, plant safety compliance and heavy equipment support
• Validate foundations, steel structures and industrial load-bearing elements
Compliance & Governance
• Ensure adherence to building codes, environmental legislation and safety regulations
• Maintain documentation aligned with industrial audit requirements
Cost & Budget Control
• Prepare detailed cost estimates
• Monitor expenditure against approved budgets
• Report deviations and manage cost control measures
- Grade 12 and relevant tertiary education in civil engineering.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering (BEng / BSc / equivalent)
- 10 - 12-years' experience in site supervision of industrial and commercial projects
- Proven exposure to steel manufacturing / mini-mill / integrated plant environments
- Experience within high-capacity operations such as large industrial plants (steel, foundry, smelting, heavy engineering)
- Advanced project management and budgeting capability
- Strong structural design and industrial foundation knowledge
- Proficiency in CAD and engineering design softwareValid Code 8 License.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
- Strong mathematical and technical aptitude
- Computer literacy certificate.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Valid Code 8 Driver's License
