Working in Australia

Possible country route: Skills in Demand (subclass 482). The employer-sponsored Skills in Demand route has stream, nomination, occupation and applicant requirements. It replaced the earlier TSS route for new applications.

Processing differs by stream and application circumstances. Check the current Home Affairs processing-time tool; employer nomination adds its own steps.

What to check before applying
  1. Confirm the sponsor and stream. Ask which 482 stream and occupation the employer intends to nominate.
  2. Check current requirements. Review qualifications, English, salary and any skills assessment on Home Affairs.
  3. Coordinate nomination and application. Keep the employer nomination and applicant visa steps distinct.

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

About the Emergency Department

Austin Emergency Department is one of Melbourne's busiest tertiary referral Emergency Departments, caring for approximately 90,000 patients each year. We provide exposure to a broad range of presentations, from common emergency conditions through to major trauma, complex medical emergencies and specialist tertiary referrals.

The department is geographically divided into Adult and Paediatric streams, providing excellent opportunities to complete ACEM training requirements and develop expertise across all age groups. Austin is also home to one of Melbourne's largest Short Stay Units, offering exceptional experience in acute clinical decision-making, patient flow and observation medicine.

Austin Health offers up to 24 months of ACEM-accredited Emergency Medicine training, supported by dedicated training coordinators, FACEM mentors and a structured workplace-based assessment program. Registrars have access to ICU, Anaesthetic and Special Skills rotations, as well as external rotations that can be tailored to individual training goals.

Education is a cornerstone of our department. Registrars receive five hours of protected paid education per week, including simulation, procedural workshops, ultrasound training, patient safety and interdisciplinary teaching. Our established point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) program includes regular hands-on teaching, bedside supervision and access to an in-house sonographer.

Registrars also benefit from weekly in-shift anaesthetic sessions, providing valuable airway management and procedural experience. Strong relationships with inpatient specialty teams foster a collaborative learning environment with excellent opportunities for bedside teaching and consultation.

FACEM supervision is available on-site from 0800-2300 daily, with overnight consultant support. Our senior clinicians are committed to providing approachable supervision, timely feedback and personalised career mentorship.

Austin has a strong track record of supporting trainees through to Fellowship. Many of our FACEMs completed their ACEM training within the department, and significant workforce growth over the coming years provides exciting opportunities for future leadership and consultant roles within the service.

We are proud of our supportive and inclusive culture. Staff wellbeing is actively promoted through TeamED, our departmental wellness committee, the ED Social Club and WEEPS (Wellbeing, Education and Peer Support), which provides confidential peer support for staff when needed. Registrar representatives actively contribute to departmental leadership discussions, ensuring trainee voices help shape the department's future direction.

About the role

Registrars will assess and manage patients according to their level of experience whilst developing advanced skills in emergency medicine, clinical leadership, patient flow and resource management.

Registrars are expected to contribute to the supervision and education of junior medical staff and medical students, participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across Austin Health.

Registrars may also be required to provide emergency clinical support to patients at Mercy Hospital when presentations fall outside the scope of local services.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Current medical practitioner registration, or eligibility for registration, with AHPRA.
  • Enrolment in, or eligibility for, ACEM training.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong commitment to high-quality patient care, clinical excellence and professional development.
