Working in Australia
Possible country route: Skills in Demand (subclass 482). The employer-sponsored Skills in Demand route has stream, nomination, occupation and applicant requirements. It replaced the earlier TSS route for new applications.
Processing differs by stream and application circumstances. Check the current Home Affairs processing-time tool; employer nomination adds its own steps.
What to check before applying
- Confirm the sponsor and stream. Ask which 482 stream and occupation the employer intends to nominate.
- Check current requirements. Review qualifications, English, salary and any skills assessment on Home Affairs.
- Coordinate nomination and application. Keep the employer nomination and applicant visa steps distinct.
Reviewed 2026-10-14. Country routes are context, not a confirmation that this vacancy or your passport qualifies.
Description (EN)
What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?
At WSP, you can draw on our global scale, contribute to significant projects and collaborate with talented professionals across a broad range of disciplines. You’ll be encouraged to explore new ideas, expand your technical capabilities and shape a career that reflects your experience and ambitions.
WSP Australia’s Mine Advisory team is growing, and we are seeking a Senior or Principal Mining Engineer with strong underground mining experience to join our team.
If you’ve built your career in underground mining but are ready for a change from the FIFO lifestyle, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for. This is a predominantly office-based consulting role that allows you to apply your operational knowledge and technical mining experience across a diverse portfolio of projects, without the ongoing demands of a site-based roster. You’ll remain closely connected to the mining industry, with occasional travel to client sites and projects as required.
You’ll work on complex mining studies and advisory assignments, helping clients develop practical, technically sound and commercially considered solutions. Depending on your experience, you may lead technical workstreams, manage projects, build client relationships and support the development of other mining professionals.
The role offers an opportunity to take the experience you’ve developed in underground operations and apply it more broadly across mine design, planning, scheduling, optimisation, technical studies and advisory work, while working alongside specialists from across WSP’s Mine Advisory business.
This position can be based in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne.
What you’ll do
- Deliver underground mine design, planning, scheduling and optimisation across a diverse range of mining projects.
- Apply your operational experience to mining studies from concept through to feasibility, helping shape practical solutions.
- Assess mining methods, production strategies, equipment requirements and project economics to support better client decisions.
- Work directly with clients on technical advisory, project evaluation and due diligence assignments.
- Collaborate with geologists, mining engineers and multidisciplinary specialists across WSP’s Australian and global network.
- Take ownership of technical workstreams and, depending on your experience, lead projects, mentor others and build client relationships.
About you
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least five years’ mining engineering experience, with a solid background in underground mining.
- Demonstrated experience in mine design, planning, scheduling and optimisation.
- Sound knowledge of mining methods, equipment selection, production planning and cost estimation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical technical solutions.
- Consulting experience is valued, along with strong communication, report writing and client-facing skills.
If you’re ready to take your underground mining experience in a new direction, this is an opportunity to stay connected to the industry while moving away from the demands of a FIFO roster. Join a role where you can influence project outcomes, broaden your consulting experience and enjoy the flexibility of a predominantly office-based career with occasional project travel.
