Working in Australia

Possible country route: Skills in Demand (subclass 482). The employer-sponsored Skills in Demand route has stream, nomination, occupation and applicant requirements. It replaced the earlier TSS route for new applications.

Processing differs by stream and application circumstances. Check the current Home Affairs processing-time tool; employer nomination adds its own steps.

What to check before applying
  1. Confirm the sponsor and stream. Ask which 482 stream and occupation the employer intends to nominate.
  2. Check current requirements. Review qualifications, English, salary and any skills assessment on Home Affairs.
  3. Coordinate nomination and application. Keep the employer nomination and applicant visa steps distinct.

About This Opportunity

The School of Social Science is seeking Casual Academics for Semester 1 2027. Casual Academics make a rich and important contribution to the School’s academic, teaching and research endeavours through the provision of a range of academically focused services and activities. Casual Academics may be engaged to fulfil a wide range of duties, including (but not limited to) lecturing; tutoring; marking; teaching; moderating/facilitating and/or student advising; across multiple academic areas.  Casual Academics are paid according to the category of their duties, as detailed in UQ’s Enterprise Agreement.

Casual Academic responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Lecturing/Teaching
  • Tutoring and Coordinating Tutoring
  • Assisting Course Coordinators
  • Marking

What We Can Offer

Current School of Social Science HDR students can apply to undertake casual academic positions for the courses listed on the School of Social Science casual academics webpage.

These are casual academic appointments. As such, there is no firm advance commitment to ongoing or indefinite work. The casual rate will vary depending on the type of work completed. Please view our various casual academic pay scales.

The marking rate for standard essays is 3,500 words per hour and the pay rate code is AC30A or AC30B.  For example, if marking 2,000 words for 18 students, then 2,000 x 18 / 3500 = 10 hours 17 mins. Initial marking hours are based upon expected enrolment figures, which often fluctuate in the first few weeks of semester. After census date, all marking is reassessed using census enrolment figures, which means that your allocated hours for marking may increase or decrease depending on student numbers.
